Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 2003 La Lagune was the first vintage whereby Denis Dubourdieu acted as consultant. It has a more fruit forward bouquet compared to the 2002 and it has aged well, offering redcurrant, dried fig and a touch of tinned prune on the nose, yet without the VA or sur-maturité that afflict other 2003s. The palate…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Medium ruby-red. Sappy aromas of blueberry, black cherry and licorice, with some suggestions of surmaturite Suave and silky on entry, then rich and rather elegant in the middle, with dark berry flavors showing a restrained sweetness. This stylish La Lagune opens out nicely toward the back, finishing with building tannins, some toasty oak and very…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Ruby-red. Exotic, full-blown aromas of coffee, leather and game, with distinct suggestions of roasted fruits. Fat, dense and lush, with a very sweet, chocolatey flavor and a suggestion of roasted nuts. A big wine with big, ripe tannins. I like what the heat of the vintage has done for this property. But this wine may…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Haut-Batailley has a modest nose: brambly red berry fruit, cedar, a little loose-knit and needing more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with lighter tannins than I was expecting, a mixture of red and black fruit but missing that tension and mineralité towards the finish. Good, but surpassed by the 2009 and 2010. (Tasted…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(a 70/30 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Good bright, deep ruby-red. Cool aromas of blackberry, cassis, mint and shoe polish. Juicy, lively and firm, with coolish flavors of cassis, shoe polish, licorice and mint. On the tough side, finishing with a firm tannic spine and good floral persistence.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Red berry syrup aromas complicated by fresh herbs and pungent pine and eucalyptus. Dense, fat and sweet but with a distinctly raw piney nuance running through the wine. Very dominated by its cabernet. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins that turn a bit dry with aeration. An awkward showing.
