A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Giscours is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It is a vintage that I have never really warmed to over several encounters. Here it has a conservative bouquet with singed leather; damp undergrowth and almost mulch-like aromas infused the dark fruit. The palate is actually better than the aromatics with edgy tannin, compact black fruit laced with graphite and cedar and a rather foursquare, slightly short finish that at least offers some freshness. I would drink this sooner than later. Tasted at the château.
