Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Bright medium red. Very ripe, smoky aromas of raspberry, strawberry and underbrush. Full, plush and sweet; at once fleshier and more complex than the preceding Gevrey premier crus. This very ripe wine boasts atypical early volume for Clos Saint-Jacques without coming across as heavy. Finishes with serious but refined tannins and excellent length. I found a bit more inner-mouth tension and floral lift when I sampled this wine from barrel but today the wine’s mineral core is hidden by a layer of baby fat.
