A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 1945 Latour is a great wine, albeit not a timeless legend in the mold of the 1959 or 1961. Here it has a wonderful bouquet with dried blood and menthol scents, the latter a leitmotif of the vintage. More liquorice aromas emerge with continued aeration. The palate is ripe and sappy with saturated tannins, segueing into a more sinewy finish that you would associate with a Pauillac. Very cohesive with a surfeit of joie-de-vivre towards the finish, this is a '45 First Growth that continues to dish out pleasure. Tasted blind at the “five” dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.
