Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(80% new oak): Deep red with ruby tones. Aromas of black cherry and licorice complicated by smoky minerality. The plushest and sweetest of this set of 2016s, but also with lovely energy and mineral lift to its flavors of black cherry and violet. Finishes dusty and very long, with an obvious element of wood tannins but no dryness. Boasts a terrific combination of density and precision. And as with the estate’s Grands-Echézeaux, this wine has not been knocked off balance by the tiny crop level.
