Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(the crop here was down just 25% from normal; aged in 25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Aromas of red and black cherry, strawberry and mocha complemented by spicy oak. Sweet, supple and fine-grained; in a rather soft style but showing a bit more energy than the Beaune 1er Cru. The wine’s fruit displays a light chocolatey quality but there’s decent framing acidity here, as well as a firm tannic spine to provide definition and structure. But still a distinctly easygoing village wine.
