The 2001 Red Burgundies at Age 15 (Apr 2017)

Slightly dull medium red. Sauvage scents of plum, mocha, earth and leather. Fairly supple and round but also conveys surprising energy to its flavors of dusty raspberry and spices, with a cool-year peppery quality providing lift. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and an edge of acidity. Aeration brought hints of dried red fruits and apricot. This will hold for a while but is unlike to improve. Alain Meunier noted that he did a huge triage in 2001 owing to mediocre maturity and a lot of rot, adding that the wines were difficult in their youth but gained in refinement as they matured in bottle.
