New Zealand Reds: Treading Lightly (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard should rename itself Seduction. If it took you on a dinner date, you’d be utterly charmed by its floral fragrance, seamlessness and sense of honed power. And you’d go on a second date. Forgive me here, but on first sniff, it reminds me of a wild-fermented Riesling with its floral and talc-like nose (it is a natural ferment). Bringing up the rear is delectably pure fruit reminiscent of red cherries and blackberries. Despite spending close to a year-and-a-half in French oak barrels, the purity of fruit is the star here. The handling of the naturally robust tannins in the Bendigo subregion is impeccable: plunged just once per fermentation, the tannins provide the entire mouth with a reassuring embrace. Very more-ish, and while gorgeous now, it has a long life ahead. This just might be the best Prophet’s Rock Home Vineyard Pinot yet.
