Washington: Various Shades of Hot (Oct 2017)

(13.5% alcohol; aged in a new 1,200-liter Burgundy foudre and the rest neutral oak): Dark red-ruby. Wonderfully aromatic nose offers scents of raspberry, licorice, brown spices, mustard seed and green pepper. Flavors of cherry and raspberry liqueur are complicated by suggestions of sage, spices and exotic fruits. Very rich wine, but shows a bit more greenness than the 2013 edition, an element that infuses the mid-palate with energy. Finishes with very ripe, spicy tannins and outstanding persistence. The vines were harvested on September 18 and 22.
