Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a perfumed, fairly “airy” bouquet of redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, crushed stone, loam and just a hint of tobacco. This is certainly what you might describe as a “transparent” nose. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. The 2021 is very elegant and smooth in terms of texture, with a mélange of red and black fruit intermixed with graphite and orange rind towards the finish. Moderate length. This will be a Clos Saint-Jacques that will drink earlier than other vintages but may surprise with its longevity.
