Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2002)

Saturated ruby-red. Cool, aristocratic aromas of cassis, violet, marzipan, tar and menthol; rather Barolo-like today. Big, rich, lush and sweet, with uncommonly intense flavors of dark berries, licorice and spices. (According to Gaja, there’s a rare vein of sand running through this vineyard, which keeps the soil drier and results in great concentration of flavor.) The fruit really reverberates in the mouth and on the strong back end. Tannins are substantial but smooth – or is there simply more supporting material here?
