Past Becomes Now: Lafite-Rothschild 1874-1982 (Apr 2024)

The 1952 Lafite-Rothschild has a straight-laced nose, like many Left Bank wines this vintage, “correct” and perhaps to some, “unexciting”. I quite admire its reserve and classicism. Dried rose petals and sandalwood mixed with raspberry unfold with aeration. The palate is well balanced, with a graceful build in the mouth and a hint of allspice and bay leaf. It gains elegance with a cohesive, charming, piquant finish that doesn’t outstay its welcome. Lovely. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild vertical at Ami restaurant in Hong Kong.
