2000 and 1999 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2002)

Medium red-ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, nuts, truffle and spice cake; less vibrant than the 2000 but very Chateauneuf du Pape. Soft and pliant, with enticing sweetness. Maturing notes of earth, smoke and truffle. A bit less sweet on the finish, which features some slightly dusty tannins. Boiron says the pH here is closer to 3.3 than to 3.5, which suggests that the fruit was only moderately ripe.
