2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Good medium ruby. Idiosyncratic nose combines cassis, black olive, black pepper and spice cake. Superripe and dense but also sappy and penetrating. Distinctly wild flavors of black fruits, violet and fresh herbs. Finishes with building tannins, excellent length and a salty impression of extract. Showed a somewhat offputting dill element with time in the open bottle. This sample, tasted in New York, was from a spring 2002 bottling. The 2000 sample I tasted chez Verset in November, which had been bottled in September, was distinctly troubled, with volatility on the nose and a distinctly stewed-fruit character. I’d advise tasting a bottle before you commit to buying a larger quantity of this wine.
