2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Saturated medium ruby. Cassis, blackberry, violet, bitter chocolate and exotic wood notes. Sweet, supple and full, with spice and herbal nuances. A very fresh, primary Chateauneuf with the tannic support to age. Not hugely concentrated but offers impeccable balance. (A second bottle tasted in New York showed redder fruit aromas; an even lusher texture; tangy red berry liqueur and spice cake flavors; and sexy wood notes. I found this bottle distinctly more pliant and forward but of equal quality.
