2012 Red Burgundy: Against All Odds (Jan 2014)

Dark red stone fruits, black plums, spices, menthol and tar meld together in the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint Georges. This is a decidedly ripe, racy Saint Georges that nicely balances fruit and structure. Raw and intense, the 2012 comes across as much less polished than the other wines in this range, especially the Grand Crus. Thibault Liger-Belair has been at the forefront of pushing for Les Saint Georges to be upgraded to a Grand Cru site. There are some years in which Les Saint Georges can hold its own with the Grand Crus in this range, but 2012 does not appear to be one of them.
