A Century – Not Out: Talbot 1919-2010 (Oct 2019)

The 1975 Talbot is served from magnum that was reconditioned in 2012. Harvest took place from 22 September to 6 October with a reported 12-13° alcohol for the Merlot and 11.5-12° alcohol for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite deep in colour, it has a slightly meaty bouquet with leathery red fruit, touches of sage and dusty attic. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. It just lacks complexity on the mid-palate, masculine and a little dry like so many 1975s are at this age, dictates by the tannins when more flesh would have rendered a better wine. Provenance plays its part here, though I would still advise bottles from sound cellars to be drunk soon. Tasted at the centenary Château Talbot vertical at the property.
