A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 1943 Haut-Brion is a vintage that I have encountered just once before. This bottle is deep in color, considering its age. It offers chlorine-tinged red fruit that almost drew me towards the 1961 vintage, rustic and a bit timeworn. The palate is what you might call “solid” and suggests a longer élevage than necessary, which was quite common at that time. Dense and muscular, I have fonder memories of the previous bottle, and this example seems a bit blunt on the finish. Tasted blind at Olivier Bernard’s “3” dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.
