A Splendid 2015 Vintage in South Africa—Time To Discover Swartland’s Wines (May 2017)

(fermented in large clay pots made from locally sourced clay): Medium straw-yellow. A bit softer on the nose than the Magnetic North, showing a high-toned metallic and lanolin quality to the aromas of pear, peach and minerals. Richer and more pliant on the palate, with lemon, orange and stone flavors conveying a wonderfully fine-grained texture and a touch of fruit sweetness that the Magnetic North lacks in the early going. This is much more pliant but is also built to age. Very Old World in style for South African Chenin Blanc, finishing quite long, with a touch of phenolic bitterness on the end. Already quite intriguing but it would be a shame not to give this wine at least a couple more years of cellaring. This held up splendidly in the recorked bottle.
