Archive Away: Mature Burgundies 1919-2019 (Jun 2024)

The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a splendid bouquet with red plum, juicy raspberry and perhaps just a patina of oak that was never fully subsumed. I would have liked a little more mineralité. The palate has a sweet entry with vivacious red fruit, blood orange and a touch of dark chocolate. It is very “Jadot” in style from Jacques Lardière’s era, but I appreciate how it gains tension in the glass. Tasted at David Pope’s 1999 Burgundy horizontal at Lorne.
