Better Than Water: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2019 in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The maiden 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the 2.9-hectare holding leased from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, located in the lieux-dits of En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne in Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses respectively. It has an intense nose with scents of yellow raisin, Mirabelle, orange blossom and frangipane. Very well defined, aromatics that just want to please the olfactory senses. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly honeyed entry, fine acidity, generous in terms of weight and texture as you expect from a Corton-Charlemagne. Fine grip on the finish, this lingers wonderfully in the mouth. This is a very fine debut, yet I also feel that the best Corton-Charlemagnes from this up and coming producer lie ahead. 506 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.
