Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

(65% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot; 24 hl/ha; 33% new barrels) Medium red. Lovely floral nose offers violet, cranberry and mineral aromas. Fresh and pure, with a pretty mineral element framing the redcurrant and blackberry flavors. A very well balanced, medium-bodied, uncomplicated Bordeaux with sneaky concentration and a moderately long finish. This estate has been making wine since the 16th century, and its 35-year-old vines, spaced at 6,600 vines per hectare and cropped at very low yields, go a long way toward explaining the quality here.
