Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

(65% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon; 30 h/h production): Dark purple. Enticing aromas of strawberry and raspberry are complicated by delicate white pepper and violet nuances. Then fresh on the palate, with a lovely floral nuance to the strawberry and raspberry flavors. Builds in sweetness and intensity in the glass. This wine is very much dominated by its cabernet franc presence, as the aromas of strawberry and spicy cocoa attest. Rising tannins give the wine an austere touch at the back, but the finish is long and refined. Cyrille Thienpont thought the cab franc vines would have a hard time ripening but in the end they surprised him, probably due to the low yields and high average age of the vines. The merlot was harvested between October 5 and 15 and the cabernet franc between October 15 and 17. Very impressive potential.
