Chianti, Vino Nobile and Super-Tuscans (Jul 2010)

(a 50/50 blend of sangiovese from Capannelle and merlot from Avignonesi; 18 months in French barriques; 35 g/l dry extract; 13.5% alcohol) Fully saturated ruby. Earth, cocoa and bay leaf nuances complement black plum and blueberry on the nose. Rich, dense and fleshy, with chocolate and pepper notes complicating the ripe black fruit flavors. This impressive wine finishes smooth but misses out on the length for an even higher score. The cooler year helped to keep the merlot from getting overripe.
