Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 2011 Marquis d’Alesme is a vintage that I have not tasted before. Like many wines in this vintage, it demands a lot of coaxing from the glass as it’s a bit conservative and unyielding, with earth and leathery aromas, missing some joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, fleshy tannins. Notes of leather mixed with dark chocolate infuse the red berry fruit, although it does not kick on towards the finish and feels just a little static. Though nicely balanced, I cannot envisage this going anywhere exciting with continued bottle age.
