Dom Pérignon Rosé Through the Decades at Vinous Icons

The 1982 Dom Pérignon Rosé, tasted from an original release and in magnum, is a last-minute addition. About an hour and half before lunch was to start, I received a frantic call that the restaurant could not locate the 1988 or 1986. Perhaps like the P2s and P3s, I have mellowed over time. These sorts of calls neither surprise nor stress me any longer. We needed a solution. I called a few collector friends and was able to source two magnums of the 1982 in the original release, plus a few other things. The missing wines were ultimately found, but we decided to open the 1982s anyway. I am very glad we did, as the 1982 gave guests a fabulous opportunity to taste Dom Pérignon Rosé from an original release, instead of a late release, providing the perfect bookend to this remarkable vertical. The 1982 Dom Pérignon Rosé, from magnum, is a timeless beauty. It remains wonderfully complex and nuanced, wearing the patina of its age with grace. Exotic spice, floral and citrus overtones lend tons of nuance. There is no upside from cellaring the 1982 further. It’s a Champagne to enjoy now and over the next handful of years. Both magnums are quite special.
