Double Vertical of Ridge’s Geyserville and Lytton Springs (Aug 2018)

Good dark red with a hint of amber at the rim. Began with an aroma of chocolate and a hint of maderization but grew more floral and fresh with air, taking on a strong plummy character that follows through on the palate. Quite plush and broad; perhaps a tad overripe but not sweet. This very concentrated, savory wine finishes with serious dusty but fine-grained tannins and excellent subtle length. Draper is convinced that the velvety quality shown by the tannins is largely attributable to the wine’s Petite Sirah component. (In 2005, said Draper, the winter went to mid-June before the rains ended; the summer was then warm but not hot.) 14.8% alcohol.
