Focus on the Central Coast (Nov 2008)

(93% syrah, 5% grenache and 2% viognier; 16% alcohol) Deep ruby. Brooding cherry, cassis, black olive and violet aromas slowly unwind to show smoky Indian spices and minerals. The palate shows classic syrah character in spades too, with deeply concentrated dark berry flavors firmed by chewy tannins, with a zesty note of cracked pepper gaining strength in the glass. Becomes softer and sweeter on the finish, with the pepper and olive notes repeating. This is by far the most recalcitrant of this set of red wines today. If you’re lucky enough to put your hands on this wine once it’s released, by all means resist the urge to open it early.
