His Father’s Son: Grand Mayne 1955-2011 (May 2021)

The 1989 Grand Mayne was apparently one of Jean-Pierre Nony’s favourite vintages. Perusing three of my own tasting notes, it is also one of mine, though I have tempered my enthusiasm, partly because the standard of Grand Mayne has improved so much since this point. It has a slightly rustic nose, maybe with just a small dose of brettanomyces, although not enough to completely obscure the brambly red fruit and warm gravel scents. The palate is medium-bodied with more freshness than the 1988 at this stage. Iron-infused red fruit, soy and bay leaf notes segues into a slightly peppery finish that has more length than preceding vintages. Drink over the next 5-7 years. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.
