Long Distance Runner: Brane-Cantenac 1924-2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2002 Brane-Cantenac has long been a vintage that is difficult to love, and this is no exception. Matured in 70% new oak, it has a tobacco-dominated bouquet that rather suppresses the black fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry, cedar and a splash of soy, though perhaps less of the tobacco element that I noticed at the previous vertical, and a slightly fresher finish. Drink this now and over the next decade. Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château.
