Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 La Pointe has an attractive bouquet, a little rustic perhaps, but retaining admirable vigor after 21 years, offering brambly red fruit and touches of iron rust and saddle leather. The palate is fully mature, though there are vestiges of rigidity in terms of the tannins. A stout and sturdy Pomerol with a ferrous, slightly dry finish but commendable length. It softens slightly with aeration, though I would broach bottles over the next 10 years and not longer. Tasted at the La Pointe vertical.
