Making the Case for New Zealand Reds (Mar 2021)

Despite the dry, hot season, the 2019 Tom’s Block continues to be its broody, full-bodied self. It’s a satisfying hunk of a Pinot that embraces you with its breadth. Imagine a well-hung piece of steak cooked over a barbecue and you’ll get the impression of this wine, with its smoky, savory, almost meaty essence. On the long finish, there’s black cherry fruit, delicate oak spice (likely from the nicely chosen proportion of new – just 15%) and resolved chocolaty tannins that coat the mouth, commonly found from the clay-gravel soils in this part of Nelson. Good job.
