New Releases from Southern Italy (Sep 2003)

(mostly grenache – the grape in Sardinia is called cannonau – aged in all new barriques Saturated ruby-red. Explosive, rather wild aromas of roasted red berries, shoe polish and truffle. Silky and pliant on entry, then chewy and vinous in the mid-palate, with decidedly musky flavors of noteworthy complexity. Very silky wine, but firm acidity gives it clarity and style. Reportedly has 35 grams per liter of dry extract. With its very fine tannins, this should become more elegant and claret-like with bottle aging.
