Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(a tiny crop from a blend of climats; Saouma normally makes his wine from En Orveaux but there wasn’t any fruit there in 2016): Good medium ruby. Inviting aromas of black raspberry, tobacco, gingerbread and honey. Large-scaled, saline Echézeaux in a rather cool style, conveying modest sweetness but excellent focus. Very concentrated but youthfully imploded, and clearly in a closed phase. The cool, rather linear finish displays slightly tough tannins. This highly concentrated wine will need time in bottle to develop more generosity of texture.
