Setting Sail – Malartic-Lagravière 1916 – 2013 (Apr 2019)

The 2013 Malartic-Lagravière comprises a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a slightly monotone bouquet with blackberry and bilberry fruit, but it does not articulate the terroir with the same panache as the 2012 or 2014. The palate is medium-bodied with bitter tannin on the entry, quite tannic in the mouth but without the fruit to back it up so that the finish feels astringent. I feel the difficult vintage leans heavily on this wine and it falls far short of recent successes at the estate. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Malartic-Lagravière.
