The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

(81% merlot and 19% cabernet franc): Red-ruby. Superripe, almost candied aromas of maraschino cherry, woodsmoke and coffee. Sweet, plush and impressively deep, with intense, penetrating dark cherry and licorice flavors that quickly shut down in the glass. Seriously structured and tannic wine, especially for merlot, and very long on the aftertaste. I’d forget about this for at least five years; by that point my original rating may look conservative. An outstanding vintage for this chateau.
