The Best New Wines from Australia (Jul 2000)

Bright, deep ruby. Syrupy black and red berries and dark chocolate on the nose. Powerful, thick and concentrated on entry, then a bit hard-edged, with bright acidity and a faint greenness. Rather awkward today, with notes of tar, coffee grounds, soy sauce and maple syrup currently overshadowing the wine fruit. Finishes with substantial, dusty tannins. Disappointing for this bottling. I regret to say that the note I published in Issue 85 was for the excellent ’94 Grange, not the ’95. Also tasted: 1999 Chardonnay Koonunga Hill South Australia, 1997 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia, 1997 Bin 128 Shiraz Coonawarra.
