The Many Facets of Rioja (Nov 2015)

Light yellow-gold. Heady, oak-spiced aromas of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, vanilla, anise and iodine, with a bright floral overtone. Smooth and fleshy on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering palate-staining Meyer lemon, tangerine and poached pear flavors lifted and given spine by juicy acidity. Plays power off of vivacity suavely and finishes sappy, smoky and very long, with resonating spiciness and an echo of vanilla. Aged for a year and a half in new French oak, this wine shows more density and energy than the excellent 2009 bottling. It’s also built to age, if you so choose, and I’d recommend some patience if for no other reason than to allow the oak to settle down some more.
