The Most and Least Important of Things: Petrus 1897–2011 (Jul 2020)

The 1967 Petrus is a vintage that I have wanted to retaste for many years as it was the first that I ever tasted. It remains a beacon of greatness in what otherwise was a poor Bordeaux vintage…except for Pomerol. This is very refined on the nose with raspberry, black truffle and cigar humidor scents that are nicely delineated and focused. The palate has good backbone and grip, maybe a little rustic compared to the 1966 and fading a touch on the finish. Yet there is wonderful balance and freshness, a classy Pomerol even after 50-odd years. Tasted at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong.
