The Year of Jazz & Wine: 1959 (Nov 2020)

The 1959 Lynch Bages was made by Jean-Michel Cazes’s grandfather who was known to produce what was then termed “modern wines” due to picking late. It has a deep garnet core with noticeable bricking on the rim. The nose offers attractive black fruit, Vervane tea, mint and a touch of hoisin, indicating that indeed this was a late picked Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins, quite medicinal thanks to traces of camphor with a bit of funky VA on the finish. In a way, not a faultless Lynch Bages, but quite delicious in a hedonistic way. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux.
