Vertical Tasting of Château Magdelaine (Mar 2012)

(95% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; 3.56 pH; 69 IPT 69; 13.1% alcohol): Amazingly youthful dark ruby. Deep, very pure aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant, violet and cherry jam. Dense, rich and suave, with multilayered flavors of bitter chocolate, fresh blackcurrant, licorice and coffee. Finishes very long and balanced, with silky tannins that avoid the astringency of some other Saint-Emilions of the 2000 vintage. Another great wine, perhaps just a little less complex than the 1998, showcasing great inner-mouth perfume and energy thanks to lively acidity, something that Berrouet feels is due to the calcaire soil. It is also one of the biggest and most structured Magdelaines I remember, he noted. The 2000 vintage was characterized by a very large crop and a fairly rainy first part of the year, but very dry weather during the second half lead to considerable hydric stress, especially on the Right Bank.
