Vertical Tasting of Sadie Family Wines Columella (Jan 2015)

(14.2% alcohol): Dark red. More balsamic and less fresh—even a bit dull—on the nose than the 2001 or 2000, with some red fruits emerging in the glass. Shows less texture and sweetness in the mouth as well, with a strong acid spine overshadowing the fruit. Gained in sweetness with aeration, demonstrating good phenolic ripeness, but I still wanted more flavor interest. In direct contrast to 2001, this was the wettest year ever, according to Sadie, “especially during the harvest, when we had about 150 millimeters of rain. The wine had greater phenolic ripeness than the 2001 or 2000 but also higher acidity.”
