Central Tuscany: Maremma, Montepulciano and Beyond (Mar 2019)

The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is just as impressive as it was last year. Dark, sumptuous and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2015 possesses stunning textural richness and yet maintains striking freshness. In 2015, Guado al Tasso is powerful and explosive, with tremendous energy in all of its dimensions. The slightly higher…

Focus on Sauternes/Barsac (Jul 2004)

Pale-medium gold. Aromas of fruit salad, honey and herbs. High-pitched and slightly hard-edged, with penetrating peach and spicy oak flavors. Rather powerful and juicy but not especially fleshy or sweet. Currently a bit unyielding on the finish and in need of time. May well be better than it’s showing today.

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Vivid ruby. Mineral-driven aromas of strawberry, black raspberry, potpourri and allspice, plus a whiff of white pepper. Very fresh, palate-staining red fruit flavors are complicated by floral pastille, baking spice and smoky herb nuances. Very deep in flavor but impressively light on its feet, finishing with strong minerality and spicy persistence. (Weygandt-Metzler Importing, Unionville PA

Inky ruby. An assertively perfumed, highly complex bouquet displays powerful, mineral-accented dark berry preserve, exotic spice, vanilla, potpourri and incense aromas, along with suggestions of cola and mocha. Broad, focused and deeply concentrated, offering palate-staining black and blue fruit liqueur, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that show remarkable clarity and are given spine and lift…

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a stricter bouquet than the Chevalier-Montrachet, more mineral-driven and, you might argue, meaner and more challenging. But maybe that’s what you want from such a noble vineyard. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite saline and lightly spiced, touches of ginger developing toward the…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Saturated ruby-red. Knockout musky nose combines black raspberry, smoked meat, Asian spices, tobacco and hot stones. Large-scaled and plush on the palate, with compelling sweetness to the layered flavors of of dark raspberry, chocolate, mocha, tobacco and toasty, nutty oak (100% new). Finishes with substantial sweet tannins and outstanding length. For all its richness this…
