Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Cheval Blanc is much more understated on the nose compared to its peers. Cedar and graphite merge with black fruit, but it is missing a bit of vigor at present. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured though a little more austere and drier. Grouchy, which makes me think of Lafleur…

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Cheval Blanc was picked from September 10 until October 4 at 41hL/ha. Pierre-Olivier Clouet said that it was important not to have too low a yield in order to maintain balance. This has an almost introspective nose at first, showing blackberry and touches of cassis, cedar and tobacco, plus a hint of wild…

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Good red-ruby. Currant, plum and smoky oak on the nose. Fat, suave and smooth; not a powerful style but offers lovely depth of flavor. Finishes with rather smooth tannins and good length.

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 Clos Margalaine is a fabulous second wine from Marojallia. Supple, racy and forward, the 2012 will drink well upon release. Red cherry, plum, smoke, cedar, iron and white pepper all add nuance. This succulent Margaux is quite expressive and inviting today.

The 2012 Magrez Fombrauge, Bernard Magrez’s flagship Saint-Emilion, is rich, racy and powerful, yet all the elements seem to come together effortlessly. Mocha, chocolate, raspberry jam, cinnamon, licorice and incense flesh out as this flamboyant wine shows off its personality. Magrez Fombrauge is a classic Magrez/Rolland wine built on sheer opulence and intensity. In short,…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

A dark, racy wine, the 2012 Branon is tightly wound and full of energy, with terrific balance of forward fruit and acidity. Black cherry, plum, mocha and spices meld together effortlessly. This deep, resonant Pessac-Léognan could use another year or so to fully come together, but it is promising. Branon emerges from a two hectare…
