Henschke’s Hill of Grace – The Garden of Eden (Apr 2023)

The 2004 Shiraz Hill of Grace is beautifully composed as it radiates mulberry, blackberry, dried mint and sage, plus hints of charcuterie. The surprisingly decadent palate takes it up a notch with deep wells of flavor and chalky tannins, all beautifully balanced before descending into a savory, refined finish. This is a classic Hill of…

Caught Somewhere in Time: Clos de Tart 1887-2016 (Feb 2019)

The 2005 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, tasted from magnum (for some reason, it always seems to turn up in this format), is one of Sylvain Pitiot’s greatest successes. It was picked September 21 to September 24 (at 11am, to be exact). The yield was 27hl/ha with 14° alcohol. The precocity of the growing season…

2006 and 2005 Red Burgundies (Mar 2008)

Deep red-ruby. Explosive nose offers superripe plum jam and chocolate notes complicated by smoked meat and lifted by minerality; some violet and black pepper nuances reminded me of Cote-Rotie. Large-scaled, broad and thick; less racy and delineated today than the young 2006 but then this very young wine’s minerality and fruit are currently hidden by…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, blackberry, spices, flowers, tobacco and sexy sweet oak tones; complex and aristocratic. Then sweet, suave and seamless, with lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy finesse to the flavors of blackberry, cherry and flowers. Finishes long and sweet, with noble tannins for the year. Not a big wine but one…

Stand and Deliver: 2001 Sauternes (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Guiraud sports a fragrant but not intense nose, featuring the lanolin and apricot notes that I observed previously; touches of grilled walnut surface with time. The lightly spiced palate is very well balanced with a honeyed opening and ginger-infused quince and marmalade flavors. It builds nicely on the finish without fully letting rip….

Focus on Sauternes/Barsac (Jul 2004)

Medium golden yellow color. Knockout nose combines pineapple, yellow plum, marzipan, roasted herbs and resiny oak. Superconcentrated, chewy and stylish, with flavors of honey, pineapple, marzipan, vanilla, toffee and spicy oak framed and intensified by bright acidity. Impressively dense, saline wine with a very firm spine and considerable aging potential.
