1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Fresh but reticent black cherry-dominated nose. More closed than the ’96 following the bottling, and a bit disjointed today. Seems drier than the ’96, but has plenty of underlying sweetness, solid structure, and nicely buffered tannins.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Good medium ruby. Medicinal black cherry, black plum, licorice and dark chocolate on the nose, plus a faint meaty quality. Juicy but quite tight, with rather austere flavors of black fruits and herbs. Shows good flavor intensity but lacks pliancy. Tannins seem a bit tough.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Talbot remains youthful in appearance. Certainly the bouquet has remained vigorous and with commendable fruit concentration over 20-years, replete with red cherries, cranberry and blackcurrant scents, cedar and hints of blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a judicious line of acidity, harmonious and linear but with satisfying depth. There…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier turned out another stellar wine with the 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Elegant, polished and wonderfully nuanced to the core, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Whole clusters enhance a whole range of Cabernet Franc inflections in a wine that is immediately seductive. On the palate, the 2019 is creamy…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with red cherries, sloes, blackcurrant and a touch of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and gentle grip. Quite structured with plenty of substance on the finish, just a touch of espresso lingering on the aftertaste. Distinctive, is a positive sense. Tasted…

Bending Rules: Les Carmes Haut-Brion 1955-2019 (Oct 2022)

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion contains 60% whole bunches, matured for 26 months in 82% new oak with 9% each of amphora and foudres. This has a beautifully-defined bouquet with pure Dorset plum, wild mint and incense aromas, just a hint of lavender in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins, crisp acidity,…
