Focus on Sauternes/Barsac (Jul 2004)

Medium golden yellow color. Knockout nose combines pineapple, yellow plum, marzipan, roasted herbs and resiny oak. Superconcentrated, chewy and stylish, with flavors of honey, pineapple, marzipan, vanilla, toffee and spicy oak framed and intensified by bright acidity. Impressively dense, saline wine with a very firm spine and considerable aging potential.

Vertical Tasting of Domaine de Chevalier Rouge (Apr 2013)

(a blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; 13% alcohol): Bright medium red. Reticent aromas of cassis, dark cherry and pungent, resiny oak. Juicy and penetrating, with firm acidity giving clarity to the cassis, mint and herb flavors. Finishes with light, dusty tannins and good persistence, if a bit monolithic and…

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Medium red. More evolved aromas of redcurrant, leather, game, earth and smoke. Leanish and a bit dry in the middle, with modest sweetness and a slightly green character. Doesn’t really expand in the mouth. Today the tannins come across as a bit dry.

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2015 Lynch-Bages has a very complex bouquet with layers of blackberry and bilberry fruit, crushed stone, cedar and graphite. It becomes earthier with aeration, with a hint of cough candy in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins. This is intense, backward, almost surly, yet the finish has incredible precision and persistence….

2011 Vintage Ports (May 2014)

Deep, saturated dark ruby. Penetrating aromas of black cherry, violet, lavender, licorice, dark tobacco and minerals. Then plush and elegant in the mouth, with outstanding depth and a hint of youthful bitterness to the superconcentrated flavors of black raspberry and spices. The wine’s perfectly integrated acidity and floral lift give the finish great hang time….
