2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Good bright ruby-red. Rather backward nose hints at cassis, black cherry, shoe polish, graphite, minerals and spices. Sweet, broad and rich, but with enticing fresh minerality giving energy to the rather full-bodied middle palate. The wine’s cassis fruit is complicated by an almost decadent floral element. Finishes perfumed and very long, with wonderfully lush, supple,…

Survive Us All: Latour 1858-2018 (Feb 2024)

Surprisingly, the 2007 Latour has a bolder and more outgoing bouquet than other vintages from this era, adorned with plush blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry fruit, slightly more floral than its peers. There’s a fine definition here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well balanced, although not the most complex in the line-up. It…

Opus One – Past, Present and Future: 1979-2012 (Jun 2013)

A total opposite of the 1995, the 1996 Opus One blasts from the glass with massive dark fruit, iron, scorched earth, graphite and new leather. The 1996 is one of the more virile, bombastic wines in this vertical. Plums, cloves, leather and tar all flesh out on the huge, imposing finish. Although a bit rustic…

Focus on California (May 2000)

Bright full ruby-red. Pungent black raspberry, leather, game, chocolate, espresso, pepper and fresh herbs. Juicy, bright and very concentrated, with crunchy currant, tobacco and dark chocolate flavors supported and amplified by a firm spine of acidity. Long on personality. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length.

Best New Releases from Australia (Jul 2001)

Ruby-red. Complex, high-toned, oak-driven aromas of mocha, flowers, spices, bourbon, peat, licorice, vanilla, cigar tobacco and earth. Juicy and penetrating, with strong mineral, lead pencil, espresso and tobacco flavors. Has a solid backbone and noteworthy grip, but shows no hard edges. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and excellent length.

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Opaque ruby-purple. Superripe aromas and flavors of cassis, violet and sweet spices. Creamy, pliant and deep but with good freshness to the mid-palate. Finishes with mounting tannins and average length. This should provide delicious near-term drinking.
