Ornellaia: A Major Retrospective 1985-2006 (Dec 2009)

The 2006 Ornellaia (magnum) is a massive, towering masterpiece. There is awesome depth and richness to be found in the glass. Flowers, minerals, tar smoke and dark fruit are all woven in an intricate fabric of almost indescribable elegance and power. Tonight the 2006 Ornellaia is absolutely moving in its beauty and expressiveness. Vintage 2006…

Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)

The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is dark, powerful and explosive, with a huge backbone of tannin that gives the wine its vertical feel and soaring intensity. Blackberry, graphite, chocolate, spice, menthol, licorice, cedar and lavender add to the wine's brooding, intense feel. A vibrant, substantial finish rounds things out in style. Readers will…

2016 & 2015 White Burgundy (Sep 2017)

Bright yellow. Very ripe aromas of peach and pineapple accented by minerals. Fat and full but with lovely acid cut to the flavors of pineapple, stone fruits and grilled nuts; fresher than the Meursault but not quite as brisk as it was from barrel a year earlier. Finishes with a suggestion of phenolic dryness and…

Vintage Retrospective: The 2001 Napa Valley Cabernets (Jun 2020)

Bright, full ruby-red. Dark, reticent scents of blackberry, cassis, licorice, mocha, toffee and minerals. Broad, dense, dark and savory on entry, then thick and vibrant in the middle palate, and still quite youthful in spite of its breadth and richness. Shows little easy sweetness but really spreads out to saturate the palate without leaving any…

Umbria – New Releases (Jun 2016)

Medium dark yellow. Ripe aromas of banana, caramel apple and pineapple, complemented by sweet spices. Concentrated and dense, offering tropical fruit and vanillin flavors enlivened by a brisk, fresher citrus quality. Intense, ripe and long, but finishes with a bitter oaky edge that needs food.

The 2014 & 2013 White Burgundies (Sep 2015)

Pale, bright yellow. Buoyant aromas of yellow fruits. Fat, sweet and easygoing, if perhaps a bit obvious for Folatières. Carillon noted that the 2013s gained in finesse during their months in cuves but I find that this wine lacks the cru’s typical subtlety and floral lift. A touch phenolic on the back end.
