2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Plum, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco, licorice, minerals and a gravelly note on the nose, along with some nutty oak. Supple and fruity, with an impression of strong acidity for the year and plenty of underlying minerality. This shows less density and structure than the 2006 but possesses excellent fruit for the year. Ripe enough but quite…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Ruby-red. Enticing delicate aromas of fresh flowers, strawberry, ripe red cherry and a hint of minerals. Juicy and light on entry, then complex and graceful in the middle, with plenty of mouthwatering strawberry and blackcurrant flavors accented by graphite and minerals. Very well balanced on the long, satiny finish, this is as far removed from…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of currant, violet, licorice, minerals and tobacco. Concentrated, sappy and quite dry; densely packed, but explosive inner-mouth energy gives this a compelling light touch. The long, palate-staining finish features serious tannins. Quite backward for the vintage, and showing no easy sweetness today.

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Haut Bailly has long been one of the knockout wines of the vintage. Now at ten years of age it retains its youthful appearance. It has a stunning bouquet with billowing, pure blackberry and bilberry fruit tinged with brine and iodine, very well defined and one of the most intense you will find…

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Exotic aromas of crystallized orange and lemon peel, toast, quinine and iodine. Fat, smooth and fairly full, with soft citrus, spice and earth flavors. A nicely harmonious ’96 with sweet middle-palate fruit, balanced for early enjoyment.

The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

The 2012 Grand Vintage is a very pretty, high-toned Champagne. Surprisingly nervous for this radiant vintage, the 2012 is going to need a bit of time to be at its best. Some of that may be attributable to early release of the 2012, which was bottled after only five years on its lees rather than…
